County Executive signs contract to regionalize medical examiner services

ONEIDA COUNTY - It is official. Beginning January 1st, Onondaga County will be handling all medical examiner services for Oneida County.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente and Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney signed the contract Wednesday.

After a much heated debate, The County Board of Legislators approved the move from a coroner system to a medical examiner system back in May.

Picente said, in the long run, this will save the county around $100,000 a year and will be a more efficient way of doing things.

"We can use those services and the building and the lab Onondaga has without starting fresh again and meeting the challenges of the 21st century without adding extra costs," said Picente. "It's about cost avoidance in the future."
