County Executive wants plan to prevent repeat of 2010 election mishaps
ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - 2010 was not a shining moment for elections in Oneida County.
New voting machines were debuted and an onslaught of problems followed, ranging from a lack of privacy when casting ballots to extremely slow returns, which were not available to and therefore not broadcast until 11:30 p.m. on election night.
Not wanting a repeat of the 2010 elections, County Executive Anthony Picente has written both of his election commissioners, asking them to tell him, in detail, the plans they have in place in order to assure voters that things will go more smoothly this year.
Adding to Picente's concern: the fact that this year's primary election is coupled with a special election to fill the 116th Assembly seat vacated by RoAnn Destito.
"While it is assumed that many flaws in the new system have been addressed, it is without question that concerns remain. These concerns are raised to me and I need to be able to respond to same in the normal course of my administration of the County," said Picente in the letter.
Picente asks both commissioners for a written report to be provided to himself and the Board of Legislators by no later than September 6.
Democratic Election Commissioner Carolann Cardone was not in the office this morning; Republican Commissioner Pamela Mandryck declined comment.
