County officials hold press conference to save local railroad

By SPENCER DAVIDSON

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Members of the Oneida County Legislature and the Utica Common Council held a press conference at Utica's Union station, Sunday.

The conference was focused on asking area residents to help take part in an attempt to convince the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) to not remove railroad tracks connecting Old Forge with Lake Placid.

State officials are considering removing the tracks in favor of using the 68 mile stretch as a recreational trail for cyclists, snowmobiles, hikers, and campers.

Yet while some groups support the removal of the tracks, others, are hoping for a renovation for the line instead, allowing it to go from Utica to Lake Placid as it did in the past.

A public hearing will take place tomorrow further discussing the issue.
