ATTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Craig Ingersoll, the man convicted of the rape and murder of a Utica woman, was found dead in prison, Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara confirms to NEWSChannel 2.

Department of Corrections officials confirm Ingersoll was found dead Tuesday night hanging in his cell at Attica State Prison, where he had been transferred to that same day.

Officials say they found Ingersoll hanging from his shoe laces around his neck. Security immediately called medical emergency staff who administered CPR as an ambulance was called to the scene. Medics also conducted a video consultation with Erie County Medical Center. Ingersoll was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ingersoll was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in February after being convicted of murder and criminal sex act in November.

DNA evidence led police to Ingersoll five years after he killed Jennifer Bennett.

A jury in November of 2012 took only 90 minutes to convict Ingersoll of Bennett's murder.

Ingersoll paid Bennett for sex then strangled her unconscious after she refused to honor a specific sexual request.

Bennett was working as a prostitute to support an addiction to crack. He then dumped her body at the Deerfield Fire Department in January of 2007.

A group of sledders found Bennett's body behind the firehouse.

Bennett's mother, Denise Saunders, reacted to Ingersoll's death. Saunders said, "It's a better outcome. He served some time in jail. He got to see what it's like to be around people as bad as him, not like a helpless woman. And he's gone now. He can't hurt anyone else ever again."

Ingersoll's death is under investigation by the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, New York State Police, the State Commission of Correction and the Wyoming County Coroner's Office.
