Flames at Forestport Boy Scout camp deemed suspicious

FORESTPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - Fire crews responded to a blaze along Route 28 in Forestport late Monday night, and it turns out it was a Boy Scouts camp.

Crews were greeted by thick, billowing smoke around 11 p.m.

The Forestport fire chief is calling the fire suspicious and says the investigation has been turned over to State Police.

More than two dozen firefighters responded to fight the blaze in below zero temperatures.

He says it's suspicious because no one was staying at the camp, and there was no power running to the out building.

Route 28 was closed for awhile while crews battled the blaze.

Crews from Woodgate, Forestport and Otter Lake battled the fire. Old Forge was put on standby.

The fire was knocked down by 12:30 a.m.

Crews weren't back in service until after 2 p.m.

Fire officials in Otter Lake tell us no one was living in the camp.
