Fire contained to first floor of multiple-family Whitesboro building

By WKTV News

WHITESBORO, N.Y.(WKTV) - Fire crews responded to a fire in a building that houses multiple apartments on Main Street in Whitesboro Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out around 9:30 at 29 Main Street.

The owner of the building was inside when the fire broke out, but was able to make it out of the building safely.

Officials tell us the fire started in the area of a pellet stove on the first floor, then spread quickly up through the wall to the second floor joists.

Crews made quick work of the fire and got it under control in just 30 minutes.

Whitesboro Assistant Chief Dwayne Evans says without an aggressive attack on the fire, it could have been a lot worse.

"You think of a house like this in a balloon construction, it gets in the walls and travels quickly to the attic, he said. "They made a quick stop of this one."

Because the fire was contained so quickly, smoke and water damage was contained to the first floor of the structure.
