Cuomo: Against 9/11 trial in NY, for hydraulic drilling in upstate
NEW YORK (AP) - Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo says he's against trying the professed mastermind of the September 11 terror attacks in NewYork.
He addressed the matter in a radio interview Thursday, a day after Attorney General Eric Holder said the Obama administration was close to deciding where to prosecute Khalid Sheik Mohammed.
Cuomo also said he supports natural gas drilling in upstate New York if it can be done safely. He says he'd be open to such drilling if it would create jobs but also protect the state's watersheds.
The prospect of "hydraulic fracturing" to find natural gas has caused a bitter rift in areas that include the Marcellus Shale formation. Supporters believe it would boost the upstate economy, while environmentalists warn it would pollute the state's water and hurt tourism.
