D.A.: Clayton Whittemore officially charged with murder

SWEDEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - Clayton Whittemore, the 21-year-old who admitted to killing his girlfriend, has been formally indicted on charges of murder.

According to Monroe County District Attorney's office, the Monroe County Grand Jury voted to indict Whittemore.

The suspect's family has hired Attorney John Leonard of Rome and is said to have met with Whittemore over the weekend when he was in Monroe County Jail. Leonard has no comment at this time.

Whittemore is still scheduled to appear in Sweden Town Court Thursday for a preliminary hearing.

According to a New York State Police complaint, Whittemore admitted to intentionally killing his girlfriend, 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut, also of New Hartford.

The news from court comes at the exact time of Kogut's wake in the Village of New Hartford, where thousands turned out in pay their respects.
