DFAS honors Holocaust survivor with lilac bushes

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Helen Sperling visited DFAS in Rome in April to talk about her childhood in Austria as Nazi Germany took over.

Her father, she says, was killed by the Nazis, and she remembers his lilac bushes being ripped out of the ground. On Thursday, DFAS associates, moved by her story, planted two lilac bushes in honor of Sperling's family.

They also mounted a plaque that reads "Lilacs for Helen: In Memory of Her Family Who Perished During the Holocaust."
