DWI charges after afternoon fender bender in New Hartford

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Sauquoit man has been charged following a two-car motor vehicle accident on Kellogg Road in the Town of New hartford on Wednesday afternoon.

According to New Hartford Police, a vehicle driven by Paul P. Ruggiero, 43, of Sauquoit was following a vehicle driven by Stewart H. Williams Sr., 65, of Holland Patent, eastbound on Kellogg Road.

Police said William's vehicle was stopped at a red signal when the vehicle driven by Ruggiero struck the rear of William's vehicle. Williams and his passenger were evaluated by EMS for injuries sustained during the crash and refused transport to the hospital.

During the course of the investigation, police said Ruggiero was found to have been consuming alcohol prior to driving the vehicle and failed multiple field sobriety tests.

Ruggiero was subsequently arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and was processed at the New Hartford Police station. Ruggiero was then issued traffic tickets for the following charges; Driving While Intoxicated, Providing an Invalid Insurance Card, Following Too Closely and is scheduled to appear in the Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.

Edwards Ambulance and the New Hartford Fire Department assisted at the scene.
