HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Police are investigating a deadly accident that forced the closure of the eastbound lanes of the New York State Thruway.

Officials say the accident happened at 1:15pm near the Herkimer Exit on Interstate 90. One vehicle was involved with as many as seven people inside, including children.

Herkimer County Coroner Vincent Enea says one adult female was pronounced dead at the scene. Enea says the woman was not a local resident. The victim's body was transported to Little Falls Hospital for an autopsy.

There were other injuries at the crash scene and a helicopter was called to the scene to transport victims but it is unclear if anyone was taken from the scene.

The accident forced the closure of the eastbound lanes of the Thruway from 1:15 to around 5pm on Sunday. Traffic was snarled for many hours as Boilermaker participants and spectators were trying to make their way home.
