Deer to blame after tractor trailer strikes car on Route 49, then bursts into flames

By WKTV News

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - A tractor trailer burst into flames overnight on Route 49 outside Rome's Griffiss exit after a car hit a guard rail, pulled over to call for help, but was then struck by the rig just after midnight.

Luckily, both drivers were able to evacuate the immediate scene before the explosion on the tractor trailer.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department says Christian Rivera of Whitesboro swerved around 12:30 am Tuesday to avoid hitting a deer.

Rivera crashed into the guard rail, then got out of his car to call 911 to have police alert other drivers of the crash.

While he was on the phone, a tractor trailer driven by Philip Allen of Laceyville, PA, crashed into his car, and came to a rest in the middle of Route 49 East.

Rivera says, that's when he heard a loud boom, and saw that the truck had burst into flames.

Fire crews from Stittville and Floyd responded to the scene and quickly put the fire out.

Both drivers were not hurt.

Route 49 East remains closed at the Dominick Street and Griffiss Exit.

Drivers are asked to use a different route.

Traffic is a bit heavier along River Road.
