Departed members of retired public safety honored at Utica ceremony

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Retired members of the Utica Police and Fire Departments who have passed away this year were honored during a special Memorial Day service held on Friday.

The Association of Professional Police and Fire Retirees presented surviving family members with a token of remembrance for their loved one. The service also served as a way to thank the families for all they have sacrifices over the years.

"They've put up with so many days of not having their husband or brother or sister at home because they were off working," said Michael Elefante, President of the Retirees Association. "So, for the department to remember them is probably a wonderful thing."

This annual ceremony has been taking place since the early 1970's.
