Dive teams search Ilion Marina after car crashes into the water

By WKTV News

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - Emergency crews were called to the Ilion Marina Saturday night after a report that an occupied car was in the water.

Witnesses say the vehicle went into the water from the parking lot area. There was a woman driving. We're told once in the water she was able to get out of the car herself and then was rescued by crews on a boat.

It's unclear if she was the only person in the vehicle. Dive teams from the St. Johnsville Fire Department were seen in full gear going under the water to search.

Witnesses say they do not think this was an accident. "I saw the lady up on the bank in the parking lot and she drove in the water. She floored it and drove in the water and basically after that it was everybody just scrambling trying to go make sure she didn't drowned. She was troubled," said Bill Matthews.

Witnesses say the woman was treated at the scene and is expected to be alright.

The Ilion Police Department is investigating along with the Herkimer County Sheriff.

Herkimer County District Attorney Jeffrey Carpenter was on the scene Saturday evening. Carpenter says they are waiting for the vehicle to be pulled up out of the water before any information will be released.
