Effort to deconstruct, rather than demolish buildings in Utica

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A new effort is currently underway to save building materials in the City of Utica and put them back to use.

The Genesis Group is pushing for the city to deconstruct buildings rather than demolish them.

Representatives from the Genesis Group said Thursday that the city of Utica would benefit by reusing materials from properties that go beyond the point of renovation but still have many precious materials.

"You've got 2x4s, floor choices, flooring, the older the building, the more of a value you're finding, because the architectural structures are pretty valuable...staircases, mantles, the wood itself, all of that comes into play with creating value," said Sam Russo, Volunteer with the Genesis Group.

The Genesis Group hopes that Thursday's meeting was the first step to start making proposals to construction companies and develop the industry locally.
