Elderly man sent to hospital after car strikes another on Route 365, catches fire

VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - An elderly man was sent to the hospital for evaluation after authorities say he struck a car fro behind, which then caused his own car to catch on fire.

According to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, there was a two car motor vehicle accident on Route 365 in the Town of Verona on around 3:25 p.m. on Monday, January 16.

According to Deputy Melissa Bolton, Gary Stein, 51, of Maryland was traveling west on Route 365 in the passing lane and began slowing for the red light at the intersection with Spring Road. Stein was then struck from behind by George Albicker, 84, of Barneveld, who had been traveling directly behind Stein. Deputy Bolton said Albicker's vehicle caught fire after impact.

Albicker was transported to Rome Hospital for an evaluation, while Stein and his two passengers were not injured.

Albicker was ticketed for Speed not Reasonable and Following too Closely.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, the Verona Fire Department and Vineall Ambulance.
