Elementary students learn about presidents from New York

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Elementary school students in New Hartford and Rome got an up close look at history and politics Friday.

State Sen. Joe Griffo visited classrooms and brought some special guests along with him -- cutouts of presidents Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Martin Van Buren. All those presidents worked in New York politics before working their up to the presidency.

"I think it was timely, because of the president's visit here and the opportunity existed," Griffo said. "So we always talk about what we do and how we do it, but we threw an extra mix into it today, showing kids what you can do if you work hard. These are people from your state that made themselves the president of the United States because of that dedication, hard work and commitment."

Griffo also answered students' questions about his own political career and current role as state senator.
