F.X. Matt Brewery undertaking project to become more self sufficient, revitalize neighborhood
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Construction is underway at the F.X. Matt Brewery to make room for an anaerobic digestion plant that will turn the brewery's waste water into methane gas from which electricity can be generated.
F.X. Matt Brewery President Fred Matt says their $4 million investment in new technology will make them more self sufficient and the only craft brewery in the country that has this type of green environmental capacity to re-use their waste water.
The new plant will be an enclosed system that will generate 30 to 40 percent of the brewery's electricity.
The brewery also plans to revitalize the area with the project and create a neighboring green space with picnic tables.
"You know West Utica, we love it, but its deteriorating a little bit," says Fred Matt. "You know we live here and we do want to make it better, so we are investing."
Fred Matt also said he hopes this will make not only their company, but Utica shine during the Boilermaker Road Race.
"One of the problems we've had is the street coming down from the Boilermaker race as you finish is kind of deteriorated, so one of the things it's going to do is make that finish line really pretty," says Matt.
The brewery plans to start building the foundations for the project this spring and then generating their own electricity by the summer.
