Family disputes sheriff's claim that inmate jumped to his death

FULTONVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - The family of a prisoner who died in the custody of the Montgomery County Sheriff's office disputes the
sheriff's claim that the man jumped from a prison van in an escape attempt.

Sheriff Michael Amato says 30-year-old Luis Torres died after his head struck the pavement when he jumped from a prison van on October 13. Torres' family has retained a lawyer who says he plans to sue the county.

Attorney Bob Keach of Amsterdam tells the Albany Times-Union that the sheriff's office was well aware of problems with the van's side door. He contends Torres wasn't wearing a seat belt and fell out when the van took a corner too fast.
