Fate of Hawkinsville Dam up in the air

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The fate of the Hawkinsville Dam is stirring debate in Boonville.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is one of the supporters of the dam. The DEC and the Hudson River-Black River Regulating Board are studying the impact of the dam to weigh the options.

Residents and local officials in Boonville say it plays a critical role in the local economy. If the dam was to be removed, there may not be enough water for boating and swimming.

"It's important as far as the land values along the river, the camps along the river," said town supervisor John Gaylord. "It has a financial impact."

There will be a public comment period, According to Gaylord, that will be later in June. A decision is set to be made in September.
