OTSEGO COUNTY, N.Y. - A father and son from Otsego County are facing a slew of charges in two different areas.

A Town of Burlington father and son were arrested yesterday following a four month joint investigation between the Otsego County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Division of Field Investigations Auto Theft and Frauds Utica Field Office and the New York State Department of Financial Services Criminal Investigation Unit.

On March 31, 2012 Deputy Michael Stalter stopped Michael Oefelein for having an unregistered trailer on County Route 16 in the Town of Burlington. A license check revealed that Oefelein's license was suspended for failing to answer a ticket in the Town of Pittsfield and Oegelein was charged with third-degree aggravated unlawful operation and assorted traffic infractions. Deputy Stalter said he observed that the Federal Certification Label which contains the vehicle identification number was missing from the inside of the driver's door when Oefelein exited his 2005 Ford F-350 pickup, prompting the pickup to be impounded for further investigation.

New York State DMV Investigator Paul Hojohn was contacted and adopted a case, and discovered that the 2005 Ford pickup that Oefelein had been operating was stolen in Melbourne, Florida in 2009. Authorities said Oefelein changed multiple parts on the vehicle including the VIN plate and then had it registered in New York State. In April 2011, Oefelin and his father, Keith Oefelein Sr, agreed to and registered the vehicle in the Cooperstown DMV office and obtained a false title and registration for the pickup.

Authorities said that Keith Oefelin also applied for and obtained insurance for the vehicle on-line from his residence in April 2011. All of these transactions caused false entries in business records, according to authorities.

Inv Hojohn also determined that Michael started in March 2011 and continued to dismantle parts off of a 2005 Ford F-250 pickup and sell them on-line without registering with the NYS DMV as a vehicle dismantler. Both Oefeleins surrendered themselves at the Otsego County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday and were arrested by investigators on multiple felonies.

They were arraigned by a Burlington Judge.

Keith Sr posted $2,500 bail at the court and Michael was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $20,000 bail. If convicted, Keith, Sr faces up to eight years of incarceration and Michael could spend up to 15 years in state prison.
