By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica Police say the fifth man accused in the assault of a family in the early morning hours of New Year's Day has turned himself in.

Benjamin Verenich, 18, of Utica has been charged with third and second-degree assault.

Verenich is one of five men who police say injured a family outside a party on Spring Street just before 4 a.m. on New Year's Day.

According to Utica Police, a group of injured people showed up at the Utica Police Station around 4 a.m. on New Year's Day, saying some of them were at a house on Spring Street when there was an argument between them and some people at the house. They told police that they were concerned a fight would occur at the house and called for a ride from their parents.

When the parents arrived, they found a group of roughly 15-20 people surrounding a male and two females.

Police say the father exited the car and got the three into the car, but as he was attempting to leave, someone came from behind him and struck him over the head with a glass Grey Goose vodka bottle, knocking the father to the ground. Once on the ground, several males punched and kicked the father and his wife and children exited the car to try and help him. When they did, police say the group then began assaulting the wife and children, punching them in the face.

The father was then able to get to his feet, police said, when someone else struck him again on the head, knocking him semi-conscious. Police say while the father was on the ground, he was repeatedly punched and kicked by several males.

One female was able to stay out of the fight and witnessed the assaults, police said.

The victims suffered various contusions and cuts and the father who was struck by the bottle continues to suffer from concussion-type symptoms, police said.

Utica Police conducted an investigation and learned that there were five males who they say were responsible for inflicting a majority of the injuries.

Aside from Verenich, the following individuals have already been arrested and charged with third-degree assault and second-degree assault:

*Daniel Brutsky, 19, of Deerfield
*Igor Germanovich, 19, of Rome
*David Tatarevich, 19, of Utica
