Finding work after retirement: "It Takes a Naked Man to Tell a Naked Story"

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Just a few decades ago, Americans could work hard for most of their lives, then retire and take it easy.

But that's all changing. People are living longer. Pensions aren't what they used to be. And sometimes, social security isn't enough to live on.

It's got many people looking for work after retirement.

Steve Mazza, a kitchen designer for years, wrote a book that could change the landscape of that job search.

In his six years as a nude model, Steve Mazza has had his figure drawn some 30,000 times.

Many a student at MVCC can remember their figure drawing class, and remembers Steve.

It started with a search for part-time work post-retirement.
Steve said, "A lot of seniors do that and a friend brought me a newspaper ad of a school looking for a model. He did it as kind of a joke, and he didn't realize I'd act on it impulsively."

Steve did. The very next day, he booked his first gig.

He'd shed his clothes more hours each week as his post-retirement nude modeling career picked up.

But this career isn't for the faint of heart.

Here's a recollection from his first experience modeling, "So I'm standing on the other side of a steel door in an almost dark room and there are 18 students waiting for me to step out of there."

He says he felt like he was at the Metropolitan Museum, ready to take his spotlight.

I'll bet your wondering what his wife thinks.

Pat Mazza is a retired from a local school district.

She said, " I know he's comfortable being nude and I've known that for a long time."

" I think he's doing something that's beneficial to the students," Pat said.

" The first question was, 'WHAT??!!'" Steve said. "'You're not really!', and I said, 'Why not? We could use a little extra money, and it's a nice job!'"

In Oneida and Herkimer counties, the median social security benefits amount to about $1,200 per month.

But for a person who was self employed, or a farmer, it could be substantially less, because it's based on what's paid in.

The average pay for a nude model in this area is $12 - $15 per hour, and models can find work at all of the local arts centers and of course the community colleges.

To help others who might be interested find comfort in this line of work, Steve wrote a book only he could write, "It Takes a Naked Man to Tell a Naked Story."

There's quite a bit of humor, but also some self realization, and it's interesting.

At some points, the book takes you where Steve goes in his mind, while he's standing on the podium in a pose. He takes us back to Vietnam, to his career as a kitchen designer, to his race course for runs like the Boilermaker Road Race.

He even takes us through a nude race he ran in Canada (you'll have to read the book to find out more about that one!)

Would a post-retirement nude modeling career provide enough money to live on? Probably not, but getting into the career could bolster the post-retirement income to a more livable pace!
