Fire Prevention Week: Students learn about firefighters

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's National Fire Safety and Prevention Week and locally, students in several districts have had visits from firefighters all week long.

Despite the school or the department, one theme has been central in every school visit, and that is for children to know two ways out of their home in case of a fire.

Students from kindergarten through fifth grade at Westmoreland Road Elementary School in Whitesboro got lessons today that go well beyond the walls of the classroom.

They leaned about fire extinguishers and staying away from matches, but perhaps more importantly, they learned that firefighters are friends.

David Russo, the principal at Westmoreland Elementary says " Kids get familiar with the firefighters, they know what they look like without their gear off and with their gear on, which in many situations helps them to be less afraid."

The students are participating in the FASNY fire prevention and life safety contest. Their posters are being delivered to state officers in November for judging.
