Fire Truck Spectacular promotes volunteer firefighter recruitment

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV)- Thousands of area residents and their families got up close and personal with fire trucks and fire fighter-related equipment Thursday night during the New Hartford Volunteer Fire Department's Fire Truck Spectacular.

The event, that took place at the New Hartford Shopping Center, drew a crowd of around 4,000. There were 35 different departments from Oneida and Herkimer Counties present, along with 66 different pieces of equipment.

The event served as a tool for recruitment.

"We always need volunteers," said Roy Schultz New Hartford volunteer firefighter and chairman of the event. "We're the largest volunteer company in the area. We have about 95 members. Other departments who are smaller, may not be quite as busy, they always need help."

Also during the event, children were able to sit in the fire trucks, ring the bells and try out some of the buttons.

"I like the fire trucks and looking in the ambulance," said Britney Brood, 7.

"Firefighters save people and they help others when they're in danger," said Austin Brood, 11.
