Fire breaks out at former Amsterdam factory

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (AP) - Firefighters are battling a large blaze at a former factory in the Mohawk Valley that has sent burning embers onto nearby homes.

Officials say the fire broke out around 1 a.m. Thursday at a defunct factory in the city of Amsterdam, 30 miles northwest of Albany. The building was used mostly for storage.

Some nearby homes have been damaged by burning embers from the factory. Fire officials say the blaze was under control by 6 a.m. but firefighters remain at the scene.

No injuries have been reported.
