Fire damages Oriskany Street home on Tuesday

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Traffic was backed up and rerouted on Oriskany Street on Tuesday afternoon while the Utica Fire Department battled a blaze.

The fire was at 1018 Oriskany Street West and started around 12:45 p.m. The fire department got several calls from drivers in the area that there was thick, black smoke. The fire was brought under control within the hour.

"I checked with the neighbors next door," said Deputy Chief Mark Ambrose of the Utica Fire Department. "It is an occupied structure. The tenants were home this morning, but gone at the time of the fire."

The cause is still under investigation. Fire officials say they won't know until Wednesday if the home is safe to go into. The first floor received the most damage in the fire.
