Fire damages storage unit complex in Norwich

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The City of Norwich Fire Department battled a fire Friday in a storage unit complex in the Town of Norwich.

A call of smoke coming from a unit of storage lockers at The Storage Center at 6138 County Road 32 was received around 8 a.m. Friday. When units arrived, heavy smoke was seen pouring from a building that held 40 storage units.

"The fire easily spread from unit to unit due to the construction of the structure," said Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo. "We had to use saws to open the doors on all 40 units in order to ventilate and put out the fire."

It took firefighters about an hour to knock the bulk of the fire down. They spent several more hours emptying the units and putting out hot spots.

North Norwich, Plymouth, Sherburne and South New Berlin assisted with fighting the blaze. Oxford Fire Department stood by to cover additional calls in the Norwich Fire District.

Norwich firefighters were still on the scene as of 3 p.m. Friday.

The cause is currently under investigation by the Chenango County Bureau of Fire and the New York State Police.
