Firework handler severely injured in accident at Utica holiday event

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A firework handler has suffered serious injures after a firework accident took place during the annual Christmas on Main Street event, according to the Utica Police Department.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the injured person at this time, but they say the employee was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center at around 6:00 p.m.. The injuries were so severe, the victim was then transferred to Albany Medical Center via helicopter.

The person is an employee of the American Fireworks Company. The company is based on Elizabeth Street in Utica and claims to be one of the largest firework display companies in the Northeast.

An investigation into the incident is taking place but police say that it appears to be an accident.
