Former Fort Drum soldier sentenced to ten years in state prison

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - A former Fort Drum soldier who stole a car and led authorities on a chase through several counties will now spend the next ten years in state prison.

Private First Class Russell Marcum was sentenced Monday in Herkimer County Court following his acceptance of a last minute plea deal in July.

Marcum escaped from military custody at Fort Drum last September, stealing a car and leading authorities on a chase through Madison and Herkimer Counties, ending in Tompkins County, where he surrendered.

His military custody came after he was charged for burglary in Watertown, accused of breaking into storage units of fellow soldiers and stealing a television and some firearms.
