(WKTV) - A former Otsego County woman was shot and killed outside a South Carolina domestic violence shelter on Wednesday, the Spartanburg County, S.C., Sheriff's Office said.
Mariann Eileen O'Shields, 55, died during surgery after the shooting. She was a former resident of Edmeston and had lived in South New Berlin at one time. Her father lives in Pittsfield, and her daughter lives in Oneonta.
Her husband, Robert Lee O'Shields Sr., 52, is charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and violation of an order of protection.
NBC affiliate WYFF in Greenville, S.C., reported that Mariann O'Shields had an order of protection against Robert O'Shields and had filed a report Tuesday saying he had violated the order by having communication with her that did not pertain to their minor daughter.
Mariann O'Shields had been staying at Safe Homes, a South Carolina organization that serves victims of domestic violence. Safe Homes does not give out an address, and it is not yet known how the suspect located her.
Mariann O'Shields was shot at least twice in the midsection. When deputies arrived, she told them her husband had pulled up next to her in a van as she was leaving Safe Homes and shot her.
Robert O'Shields was arrested after he was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by family members for a panic attack.
