UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A former maintenance mechanic with the United State Postal Service was recently sentenced in federal court on child pornography charges.

According to Untied States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian, Michael P. Geary, 56, of Utica, was sentenced on July 27 in U.S. District Court in Syracuse.

On February 7, 2011, Geary admitted to using a government computer at the Utica Post Office to search for, receive, and view child pornography.

As a result of his pleas to the receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography, Geary was sentenced to 70 months incarceration for each count, to run concurrently with each other. That equals out to just under six years in prison.

Upon Geary's release, he will be on supervised release for 20 years. Geary will be required to register as a sex offender and undergo sex offender treatment.

Geary was also ordered to pay a special assessment of $200.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, with assistance by the Utica Police Department, and Oneida County District Attorney's Office, as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.
