Friendly's Restaurant in Sangertown Square to close Sunday

By ANDREW DONOVAN

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The last sit-down restaurant at Sangertown Square mall will be closing its doors next week.

According to an employee who answered the phone Wednesday morning, the Friendly's Restaurant at Sangertown Square in New Hartford will serve its last meals and ice cream on Sunday before closing its doors for good.

According to Larry Ross, the Director of Marketing for Friendly's parent company Kessler Foods, the lease on the location is set to expire and the company could not come to terms with Sangertown Square to resign.

Other restaurants in Rome, Oneida and Oneonta will be unaffected.

Ross said around 20 people work at the Sangertown Square location and all have been offered jobs at the other local locations. He was not sure how many had accepted positions, but he says it was the company's goal not to eliminate jobs.

Mall officials said they could not comment on word of the closing.

It was January of 2007 that Sangertown Square saw the closure of Ruby Tuesday's. Mall officials said the restaurant's lease had also expired and managers chose not to renew it.
