ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Funding has been secured for a biomass-fuel heating and electric power plant to support the needs of the Griffiss Business and Technology Park in Rome.

Construction is expected to begin in the next month or two and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2013.

"This public-private benefit partnership is a huge step in sustaining the presence of Griffiss Park's federal defense and research facilities, supporting private-industry tech jobs and boosting regional economic development initiatives, while also representing this area as a leader in attaining government green standards," said Michael Davis, GUSC Energy Inc. President.

GUSC Energy Inc. Is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Griffiss Utility Services Corporation, a not for profit local development corporation providing utilities at Griffiss Park.

Dan Maneen, President and CEO of Griffiss Utility Services Corporation said that tenants other than the federal Air Force Research Laboratory Eastern Air Defense Sector and the Defense Accounting Finance Service facilities located at the Park will benefit form this public-private partnership through lower energy costs. Maneen also said they include a variety of privately-owned tech research companies, the Oneida County Airport, Premier Aviation, the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel and Oneida Savings Bank.

Maneen said the project has been designed to be fuel-flexible to avoid normal fluctuations in the availability of wood materials and variables of the renewable wood fuels market. In addition to forest-based resources, the plant also is able to use material from the unadulterated industrial sources, such as pallets and leftovers from wood-products mills.
