Furloughs begin at DFAS, run through end of September

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Furloughs have begun at DFAS, impacting employees across the country, including at the site in Rome.

According to officials at DFAS, the furloughs began Monday and will occur once a week from now until the end of September. Different employees will not work on a particular day of the week. Officials said the determination of who does not work on which day is worked out between the employees and their supervisors and varies between employee and site.

The furloughs, defined as "a temporary unpaid leave," are a direct result of sequestration, which is automatic budget cuts that went into effect when the U.S. Congress and Senate could not reach an agreement on the budget.
