Local Future Farmers of America harvest willow for energy

By WKTV News

VERONA, N.Y.(WKTV) - Students in Vernon Verona Sherrill's Future Farmers of America program are harvesting now to fuel future production of maple syrup.

Tuesday morning the students harvested willow they planted in spring of 2009 with the help of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

It's all part of a study to find out which variety grows best in our area.

The school is also using a US Department of Agriculture grant to purchase chips and an evaporator to use in next year's sap harvest.
