Gas price war heats up in Herkimer County

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - About a month ago, a gas war began in Ilion as a new Fastrac gas station and convenience store opened with low prices, and a nearby Stewart's station followed suit.

Now it appears that gas price war has moved east to both the Village of Mohawk and Village of Herkimer.

On Friday morning, the Fastrac at the intersection of Route 28 and Main Street in Mohawk was selling gas for $3.19 per gallon. It's $3.26 if you don't have the Fastrac Gas Card.

At the Fastrac on Route 5 in the Village of Herkimer, gas was $3.22 per gallon, and $3.29 if you don't have the fast Trac Gas Card.

Cindy Sutton of Dolgeville was filling up at the Herkimer Fastrac on Friday morning and couldn't believe her eyes when she saw the low price.

"I'm in Heaven," Sutton said. "This (S.U.V.) usually takes, like, $100 to fill up. Not today."

We tried to contact the officials at Fastrac for comment on why their prices are so low right now throughout the valley and how long they may last, but we are still waiting for a call back.

Ed Welsh with AAA in Utica says it's a good old-fashioned price war, the likes of which he hasn't seen in years.

"What they're trying to do is capture market share and have customers come into their operation," Welsh said. "You know, I've always preached that if you have to drive more than 10 miles to save money on gasoline, it's probably not worth it. This might be the exception, the price is so much lower."
