UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Genesis Group of the Mohawk Valley is highlighting the importance of Rome Labs, not only to the City of Rome, but to the entire nation.

The effort comes as leading senators in Washington clash over whether to make big cuts to defense spending.

The group held its regular meeting Tuesday morning at the Hotel Utica where they honored local businesses. Special guests included researchers from the Air Force Lab and also from the Cyber New York Alliance.

The local experts echoed warnings from national defense officials, with both agreeing that reductions hitting the 50 states will increase national security risks.

"What we need to do is start talking in a positive light about the capabilities of Rome Lab and what it does for our national and our protection," said Mary Carol Chruscicki, Executive Director of the Cyber NY Alliance.

Also recognized at Tuesday morning's meeting was Chanatry's Supermarket and Rome's Area Chamber of Commerce, both celebrating 100 years. The Bank of Utica was also honored for its regional promotions.
