(WKTV) - A 6-year-old girl was critically injured in an accident on State Route 12 in the Town of Marshall on Tuesday morning, New York State Police say.

Jayda Colter of Whitesboro is listed in critical condition with head and chest injuries at SUNY Upstate Medical Center, where she was transferred after being transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital by Waterville Ambulance.

According to officials, around 7:57 a.m. on Tuesday, Liberty J. Caye, 37, of Utica was southbound on State Route 12 in the Town of Marshall. He approached a curve in the roadway and began to lose control of his 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. Caye was unable to regain control of the Hyundai and crossed the northbound lane, where he then exited the east shoulder of the roadway, police say.

The vehicle then struck an embankment, causing the Hyundai to rollover and come to rest on its passenger side in a field. The Jayda was partially ejected out of the rear passenger side door, which had become ajar during the rollover. The vehicle was resting on the girl, and several motorists stopped at the scene and assisted in rolling it off her.

A third passenger, Elrick Colter, 14, of Whitesboro, was not injured. Charges are pending further investigation.
