Governor issues state of emergency
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a state of emergency for several portions of the state due to severe winter weather.
Counties under a state of emergency include: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Monroe, Oneida, Orleans, Oswego, Wayne and Wyoming.
A stretch of the New York State Thruway in western New York that leads to the Pennsylvania border is being shut down because of an incoming snow storm.
Beginning at 8 p.m., all vehicles heading west on the Thruway will be detoured off the highway at Exit 50 and all eastbound traffic will be detoured at Exit 61.
Motorists to Pennsylvania and points west are being asked to exit the Thruway at Exit 46 near Rochester to Interstate 390 and then to Interstate 86 westbound into Pennsylvania.
The National Weather Service has posted lake-effect snow warnings through Wednesday south and east of Lake Ontario, with total accumulations of more than 3 feet possible.
States of emergency were declared in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Monroe, Oneida, Orleans, Oswego, Wayne and Wyoming counties.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has also activated the state Emergency Operations Center.
