UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Two local state lawmakers took their oaths of office today in front of some of their youngest constituents.

Senator Joseph Griffo and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi were sworn into office at Bellamy Elementary School in Rome and Watson Williams Elementary in Utica.

The two said they wanted to involve the youngest citizens in the system that was designed to work for them and their families.

While they belong to different parties, the two agree on the priorities for the present year and term: jobs and the economy.

"My focus will be on the economic development issues because we still have many economic challenges in centralNnew York and the north country. Some initiatives are really great initiatives, some we can expand upon," says Brindisi.

"We have many good things going on here between our industry our agriculture our tourism. We want to market that to the rest of the state and the rest of the country," said Griffo.

After the swearing in, the students asked questions and talked with their lawmakers.

One issue for which the governor does not have the support of these young future voters: lengthening the school day or year.
