(WKTV) - While most schools and businesses have a fire sprinkler system, few have thought of installing one in their homes.
The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs gathered its members at Turning Stone on Wednesday to see a sprinkler demonstration and to call on the governor and the legislature to pass a measure that would require a sprinkler system in newly constructed homes and homes undergoing major renovations.
The demonstration showed that at three and a half minutes, a room without sprinklers is destroyed by fire. A room with sprinklers knocked the fire down and allowed people to escape.
"You can see how fast the fire progressed, how fast it was put out," said Chief Dan Schwertfeger of the Floyd Fire Department. "We're talking minutes here. In a volunteer service, by the time you get toned, go to your fire house, get the trucks and respond, you're talking five, six, seven minutes...sometimes more depending on whether it is. It's a matter of life and death, no doubt."
The cost of installing a sprinkler system is about $3,000 for an average-size home.
