Gun shops busy as lawmakers pass new gun laws

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Amid all the discussion and voting at the State Capitol on Tuesday regarding gun laws, gun shops and sporting good stores that sell firearms were very busy.

Customers filled the store and were blowing up the phone lines, as well, store officials said.

Joe Tierney, of Mohawk Sport Shop in Rome, said he saw an increase in sales right after the Sandy Hook tragedy.

With New York preparing to enact the country's toughest gun control laws, he's seeing even more business. This time, though, he says it seems to be the ammunition that people are scrambling for.

"I had to turn my phone off," Tierney said. "We're closed on Mondays and I had to turn my phone off so I could sleep because people just kept on calling."

Tierney says people are panic-stricken over what they think they won't be able to get after the tougher gun laws take effect.
