Haddad trial: Baked goods had anti-imflammatory in them

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Testimony Thursday morning in the attempted murder trial of a Frankfort woman accused of stabbing her estranged husband centered around...baked goods.

Jenise Haddad is accused of stabbing her estranged husband, Todd Smith, at his parents' Westmoreland home back in March. Police arrived at the scene to find both Haddad and Smith with stab wounds.

A few days before the stabbing, Todd Smith took what have been referred to at trial as brownies or peanut butter bars to the Oneida County Sheriff's Department for analysis. Smith said his estranged wife had brought them to him, and that he had noticed a white substance, which appeared to be a pill casing, inside the baked good. Analysis revealed the substance was diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory.

Oneida County Sheriff's Deputy Peter Helt spent several minutes on the witness stand answering questions about the substance. Who put it in the brownies or peanut butter bars was never established.

Victim Todd Smith is expected to take the witness stand this afternoon.
