VERNON DOWNS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A unique summer camp is taking place at Vernon Downs this week.

Campers from as far away as Connecticut are learning about harness racing and how to properly take care of horses. The Harness Horse Youth Foundation holds camps all over the country.

This session, in particular, is for kids ages 11 to 14.

"They clean stalls, learn about safety, one they begin by learning about all the different to properly harness a horse and by the afternoon, they are out jogging horses with licensed drivers from each track who help them," said Keith Gisser of the Foundation.

"I've always been interested in animals," said Malia Minckler, a camper from Vernon. "When I heard about this camp, I was so excited that I couldn't even think of anything else."

The goal is to educate the public and generate interest in this type of racing.
