"Have two ways out!" - Fire Prevention Week in Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - If you woke up to a fire in your home, how much time do you think you would have to get out safely?

According to the National Fire Protection Association, you'd have less than six minutes.

That is why the Utica Fire Department is taking the message to local schools to "Have two ways out!"

Here are some tips they offered when they visited Watson Williams Elementary School and Kernan Elementary School on Tuesday morning:

- Make a map of your home.
- Mark a door and a window that can be used to get out of every room.
- Draw a picture of your outside meeting place on your escape plan.
- Write the emergency phone number (911) on your plan.
- Have a grown-up sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape plan.
- Keep that plan on your refrigerator.

Tips for parents:

- Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
- Interconnect smoke alarms so that if one sounds, they all sound.
- Make sure everyone in your home knows how to respond if the smoke alarm.
- If you're remodeling, consider installing home fire sprinklers.
