(WKTV) - A 21-year-old Herkimer College student from Amsterdam has been identified as the man who drowned Sunday afternoon near Moss Island, Little Falls Police said.

Michael Flowers, 21, drowned after several friends decided to swim across the Mohawk River, authorities said.

According to officials, when Flowers began showing signs of stress, another man attempted to save him, but was unable to. A dive team from St. Johnsville Fire Department, assisted by Little Falls Fire Department, Little Falls Police Department and New York State Police, found Flowers in 35 feet.

Flowers was 20 feet from the shore. Officials say there is no evidence of alcohol or drugs being a factor in the drowning.

An autopsy will be performed at Little Falls Hospital on Tuesday.
