Herkimer County Legislature votes to close Country Manor

(WKTV) - The Herkimer County Legislature unanimously voted Wednesday to close Country Manor.

The next step is drafting a closure plan, which will include the relocation of the 19 residents at the adult care facility. Lawmakers are expected to begin work on that Thursday.

The chairman of the board says running the facility was costing taxpayers between $500,000 and $800,000 a year, and the facility needs $1 million in improvements. Jim Bono says the county couldn't afford it.

"From the onset, this county legislature had every intention of taking care of the residents first and foremost," Bono said. "The second was take care of employment. The effort was made there."

The goal is to keep all 19 residents in Herkimer County, although 30 people will be unemployed. The closure process could take six to nine months.
