Herkimer County confirms case of rabid horse in Newport

(WKTV) - A rabid horse has been found in Newport, according to the Herkimer County Public Health Department.

According to officials, the rabid horse was found in the past week and was sent to Wadsworth Laboratory and confirmed to be infected with the virus.

Residents of Herkimer County are reminded that rabies is lethal to people, pets and domesticated animals and it is important that pets are vaccinated. An unvaccinated animal exposed to a positive rabid animal will require a six-month quarantine.
