Herkimer County students get environmental education

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The value of natural resources was one of the focuses of the 2014 Herkimer County Envirothon on Wednesday.

About 50 high school students -- from Central Valley Academy, Frankfort-Schuyler, Poland and West Canada -- participated in the event at Herkimer College.

The students identified animals that live in the woods and water and spent time in the woods learning about different trees. Volunteers from the state DEC and USDA also taught the students the value of natural resources.

"People are starting to realize natural resources turn into dollars," said Gerry Smithson of the Herkimer County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The students used the materials at different stations to complete tests. The Herkimer County Soil and Water Conservation District organized the event.
